Teach Music From Home is here to help musicians build a business by teaching music lessons.
I'm sharing all the processes that I followed (or should have followed) as a beginning music teacher and entrepreneur.
Starting a home business transformed my life. My home business success has led to the happiest, healthiest lifestyle I’ve ever known. I've gotten the chance to help a lot of people learn how to play music. In 2016 I quit my job as a K-12 special education teacher to teach instrument lessons at my house. The changes happened very fast. Let me count the ways:
I was finally working with music.
I could work from home.
My wife didn't need a job and could devote her time to home schooling our kids.
I didn’t have to work in the morning.
I didn’t have to work full time.
I chose my own days off, like my children’s birthdays and Halloween.
I didn’t have to leave my family for work anymore.
My family even worked with me teaching music to kids.
Before long I had a sense of security that I never had as a contracted teacher.
I do not recommend you quit your job unless you are certain you can handle the loss of your income. In my specific case, I was willing to risk losing my income if my plan didn't work.
When I was still an employee, three points convinced me that I could handle losing my paycheck. First, I was already teaching a couple music lessons on the side. Second, my K-12 career would make a good fallback if it didn't work. Third, I knew I could survive on my savings for some time if my business was slow to grow.
My full time job and professional career felt like extra weight. I was full of entrepreneurial energy and drive that I couldn’t use in the classroom. I had even formulated a realistic one-year business goal. The numbers were comparable to my teaching job, with half of the work time. My family's lifestyle would change overnight. When I thought about all that one day I decided to quit.
I had to be confident when I created my one-year business goal. That confidence came back again and again, every time I thought about my goal. I accomplished my business goal only months later. By that time, my lifestyle had completely transformed. My family and I were happier than ever.
I continued providing all my lessons in my house for almost four years. Then COVID-19 hit, and that was the first event that rocked the boat. In March 2020 I decided, like most other music teachers, to switch to providing all my lessons online. I had never done any online lessons before.
The first few weeks were a bit of a learning curve. But, I only lost a handful of students in the process. Soon I learned how to give online lessons that were fun and effective.
Today, I still provide all my lessons online. My students are having fun and making progress. I've continued getting new customers. And now, my family's lifestyle has improved even more because all my work is online.
I've been able to overcome challenges during the process of developing my business. But it wasn't easy. I had plenty of hurdles.
There were periods working with unwilling students. There were difficult parents. There were brilliant students who caused me to wonder if I was a valuable teacher for them. At one time I had to shut down a set of fun group classes. And there have been lots of times when sales were low and my family has had to reduce our spending.
But every time we've faced challenges, we've been able to figure out a solution.
Now I want to help others find the same happiness that I have. I want you to develop your business and become confident in your own teaching strategies.
